Princeton: Sarah Steele had her second consecutive hat trick.

Princeton, NJ:   (By Anthony Caruso III  Special to njsi.net/Photo by Alex Cena) Sarah Steele had her second consecutive hat trick.

CLICK HERE for more photos from the game.

090314-2564Steele had hat tricks against the No. 4 ranked, Duke Blue Devils and the Penn State Nittany Lions. With the three goals yesterday, she has already surpassed the career-high 6 goals she scored last year to set a new record with a career-high 7 goals so far this season. Steele’s three goals were able to help the No. 7 ranked, Princeton Tigers beat the Nittany Lions, 9-7, yesterday afternoon in a non-Conference game at Class of 52 Stadium.

“I think last year we had a lot of attackers,” said Steele. “And this year, we’re not as attack heavy, so its really given me an opportunity to step up. Being a bench player for the last three years, now, I have the mentality that I have nothing to lose.”

Steele has 16 goals so far in her career. She has 13 games over the course of the rest of the season to increase those numbers. (more…)

Time to Get Your Early College Applications Out

Early Decision and Early Action deadlines are fast approaching for many universities and colleges.   Just a quick heads up for you high school seniors out there.  You may think you have plenty of time but you do not.  Some schools have a November 1st deadline and those need to be post marked by today.  Some are as late as December 15th.  If you have not done so, you better get moving.  Your parents and high school guidance counselor are ready and willing to help, but you still need to just do it.  Here are some things to double check and make sure: 1)  your teachers and guidance counselor mailed in their recommendations and your high school has sent your transcripts for early schools;  2) you sent scores (AP scores, SAT scores, ACT scores) to all early schools;  you SIGNED your application; 4) you included payment; 5) you track your package so you see when it arrives.  In fact, we would recommend using only UPS or Federal Express and NOT the US Post Office; and 6) you make copies of the common application and other application materials in case it’s lost in the mail.

If you still are a sophomore or junior, I suggest you get someone to supplement your school’s guidance counselor so you can start planning NOW.  We used Mimi Doe and Michelle Hernandez Consulting.  They were a tremendous help in assisting us plan the summer of senior year and have all our kids applications done before the start of senior year.  Two kids and 22 applications filed by the end of September and we already have started to hear back from schools with rolling admissions.  It’s a great relief to get those early acceptance letters in the mail!!!

If you are an athlete, you better start thinking about creating a recruiting video during your junior year.  When you start visiting schools and meeting with coaches, many are going to ask for a copy of your video.  College coaches just do not have the resources to come and see everyone play so a recruiting video is the ony resource that will enable them to evaluate your abilities.  You do not have to use us, but use somebody other than an aunt, uncle or friend who may or may not know how to use their video camera and, ABOVE ALL, start the process during your junior year. It could be the difference between getting and not getting a scholarship, but more importantly it could be the difference between getting into your stretch school or not. Think education first, sports second!

Virginia @ Princeton Mens Lacrosse

Princeton, NJ - (Written by Anthony Lawrence Caruso, III for NJSI) The Princeton Tigers and the Virginia Cavaliers had to deal with heavy rain throughout the lacrosse game, including water piles on the field, at Princeton Stadium, in Princeton, NJ yesterday afternoon. In a match-up between two Top-15 teams, according to Inside Lacrosse, the teams didn’t disappoint their nationally-televised audience.

Both teams are known for playing low-scoring, defensive games. However, the rain affected their defense and let their offense shine for much of the game. Both teams combined for 22 goals in the game, with 12 coming from the Cavaliers, and would win the game, 12-10, in their first meeting since last year. The Cavaliers also won their last meeting.

The Cavaliers used a second-half offensive outburst to take a 4-goal advantage right out of the gates. The Cavaliers scored 4 goals, including one with a man advantage, in a 1-minute, 40-second span to open the second half. Shamel Bratton opened up the scoring, with his 5th goal of the season, at 13:21.

Brian Carroll had two goals during that span. Nearly 30-seconds after Bratton’s goal, Carroll scored his 12th goal of the season, and he would score his second goal at 11:43 — his second goal was scored with Virginia being a man-up after Charlie Kolkin had a penalty with an illegal body check. Danny Glading scored his 13th goal of the seas at 12:39.

Princeton would mount a comeback. After the 4-goals by the Cavaliers, Princeton would make the game close, with three straight goals. They would score 3 goals in a 7-minute and 43-second span, with 1:30 left in the third.

Bob Schneider would score an unassisted goal at 9:45 to make the score 6-10. Nearly a minute and two seconds later, Alex Haynie would score at 8:27, assisted by Josh Lesko, to make the score 7-10. Mark Kovler would score at 2:02 in the third period to make it 8-10.

With a minute plus left in the third, Virginia would score another goal. Brian Carroll would score his third goal of the game with 1:11 in the third period to make the score 8-11.

The 4th period would be totally different than the 3rd period. There would be only 3 goals scored in the 4th period, as opposed to the 8 combined goals from both teams. Princeton would score two goals in the period, as opposed to Virginia’s one goal.

Ben Rubeor would score the only goal for Virginia in the period at 11:48 to make the score 8-12. The goal was his third in the game.

Princeton’s Bob Schneider would score his second goal of the game at 8:58 to make the score 9-12. Mark Kovler would score the final goal of the game at 2:07 to make the score 10-12.

Kovler lead all scored with 4 goals. He would have two goals in the second period at 5:51 and 0:24, then one goal each in the third and fourth period.

After the Kovler goal at nearly the 2-minute mark, Princeton would go with an extra forward and no goalie. Princeton would have opportunities to score; however, Virginia would stop those chances.

With no goalie, Princeton’s defense came up huge, without giving up an additional goal. The Tigers defense had to protect an empty net — including a flurry of shots late — that kept the score 12-10.

Princeton has fell to 1-2 on the season, while Virginia improves their record 6-0 on the season. Next week, the Princeton Tigers play another home game at Princeton Stadium against Hofstra, while Virginia plays this Tuesday at Mount St. May’s in Emmitsburg, Maryland. (more…)
