Summit, NJ (Written by Louis W. Rossi for NJSI/Photos by Alex Cena) - As the Shade began to finally take over Pat Conley Field in Summit, the Ladies of Cranford and G. Livingston field hockey took the field for the second Union County Tournament quarterfinals game to be played there this past Saturday, October 06.
“We were very concerned coming into this game,” stated Cranford Coach Jodie Perrotti, “[G. Livingston] is a team we have a lot of respect for. They’re a very quick team. They could score at any time.”
Despite Perrotti’s concerns the first half began on a solemn note, both teams pushing deep into each other’s respective territory and being almost immediately turned around by the opposition. However it didn’t take long for the ladies of Cranford to start establishing a monopoly on the ball; keeping G. Livingston on their toes and forcing their defense to make countless plays to keep the threat level low.
Amongst the key defenders for G. Livingston was #26 Jess Bostwick, making countless stops, steals, and eventual clearing shots well past the midfield giving Cranford an unmistakably frustrating experience when driving the ball towards the goal.
Despite the effort of Bostwick and her teammates, # 9 Ashli Kravarik of Cranford, assisted by #28 Jenn Handy, scored with just 1:58 remaining in the first half.
The advantage of being one goal up starting the second half stuck throughout the remainder of the game. Just six minutes after the half #21 Elizabeth Snyder, assisted by #9 Ashli Kravarik, broke through the defense to score one of what would be three second half goals.
Cranford continued to work hard keeping the ball in G. Livingston’s territory for all but a few moments the second half. Cranford’s own goaltender, Becky Quinn, in fact only saw one shot come her way the entirety of the game, a misdirected shot coming through traffic which ricochet off her pads and out of bounds ten minutes into the second half.
Just shy of 11 minutes left to play, a penalty was called on Livingston goaltender A. Sylvester for trapping the ball. Cranford’s #30, Jennie Drecksel, was awarded a penalty stroke; which she assertively scored giving Cranford a 3-0 lead.
But that wouldn’t be all; Drecksel would be back again eight minutes later to score on an assist from #17 Kristen Hardman, putting Cranford up 4-0 and all but sealing the game against G. Livingston.
After the game Perrotti offered her thoughts on the victory saying, “I was especially concerned the first three minutes we were out there. We weren’t making our cuts and seemed a bit sluggish and un-reactive to the ball. This is [G. Livingston]’s advantage being on the same surface type they play on at their home field. We played hard, and were thankfully rewarded.”
