2007 Boys Lacrosse Preview

Opinion Written by Dave Roberts

Lacrosse continues to be the fastest growing sport in New Jersey. New programs are materializing throughout the Garden State eagerly gearing up for the 2007 season. Let’s take a look at the players and teams to watch:

060610-58771.jpg060610-59441.jpg060411-0026.jpg

Photos by Alex Cena and Eugene Parciasepe, Jr.

Attackman:

  • Jack McBride of Delbarton was an all-area, all-state, and all-American performer last year. Leading the way for the Green Wave with 57 goals, 28 assists, and 79 ground balls, McBride is poised for another outstanding season.
  • Matt Langan of Madison was awarded 1st team all-state and became the 3rd All-American in Madison lax history tallying 63 goals in his junior year
  • Mike Maydick of Seton Hall Prep received 1st team all-state honors in 2006.
  • Cory Zindel of Randolph was an all-stater in ’06 and has a scowling grimace to prove his intimidation worth

Defensemen:

  • Randolph’s John Lade was amongst the state’s and country’s top defensemen last year. His uncanny speed and quickness enabled him to grab over 200 loose balls in 2006.
  • Bobby Doyle led Lawrenceville to an undefeated 20-0 record last year that ended with a #10 in the nation ranking. The all-stater is back for his senior year.

Goalkeepers:

  • Brian Sampson of Mountain Lakes was selected 2nd team all-area as well as 2nd team all-state. The Lakers are riding on Sampson’s abilities for another successful season.
  • Kinnelon’s sophomore standout Andy Brown had a career year and won 2nd team all-area honors. Look for this junior to make big time improvements with another year under his belt.

Teams to Watch:

  • Delbarton remains the easy favorite in New Jersey. Amassing a 21-1 record and ascending to 6th in the nation last year, the Green Wave will ride McBride all season.
  • Madison returns all state defensemen Robert Novack, all state midfielder Bobby Caetta, and attack man Matt Langan. The Dodgers recently beat one of New York’s best in Sayville in a preview of what’s to come later this season.
  • Mountain Lakes will look to repeat as Group 1 state champions in 2007/ The Gibbs Division Champs will rely on goalie Sampson and a talented core of senior talent.
  • Chatham has a great year in 2006 with a 16-5 record, but a new goalkeeper and fatigue from their run in the basketball state championship could play a factor
  • Morristown Beard is a perennial powerhouse who was NJ Prep B state champions last year. How the team rebounds from some key losses to graduation will determine their worth. The Crimson will rely heavily on Tyler Bocchino, Keifer Weidmaier, and Sumer Moussa

Games to Watch:

  • 4/11 Delbarton hosts rival Seton Hall Prep for private school bragging rights
  • 4/13 Delbarton visits one of New York’s top teams in St. Anthony’s
  • 4/13 Moorestown hosts Lawrenceville in a big time Group II match up
  • 4/25 West Essex welcomes Chatham in a group I toss-up
  • 4/25 Mountain Lakes goes to Delbarton
  • 5/12 Holy Trinity of NY pays a visit to Randolph
