Gymnastics is very difficult to photograph in many venues because you cannot use strobes to both freeze the action and get clear photos as well as the added benefit of darkening the background to make it look less cluttered. These were all shot at ISO 6400 with a Canon Mark IV set to a shutter speed of 1/1000th of a second with an aperture of f/4. Though some were taken with a Canon Mark III at ISO 3200 1/800th of a second f/3.2 Also, it was difficult to get a clean background because there were three events going on simultaneously and there was something busy at every angle. It would’ve been perfect if the hall was not so evenly lit. If the floor was lit evenly and the seats lit less (i.e. a stop preferably two), then I could’ve photographed the gymnasts and have the background go dark to black. The Black Knights have now won 11 straight games when limiting their opponents to less than 60 points.
Mount Saint Vincent jumped out to an 11-7 advantage on the strength of a 3-for-6 start from three-point range. The Black Knights, playing their first game in a week, started sluggish on the offensive end, hitting just three of their first seven shots and turning the ball over three times in the opening seven minutes.
Army trimmed the Dolphins’ lead to 13-11 with 10:40 to go when junior G Mitch McDonald found junior F Jeremy Hence for a layup, but Mount Saint Vincent answered right back with consecutive three-pointers by Johnson to claim a 19-11 lead with 9:23 left.
Senior C Chris Walker ended a three-minute, 29-second Army scoring drought for the Black Knights to make it 19-13 with 7:11 to go. The basket jumpstarted an 8-0 run with Richard’s three-point play tying the game at 19-19 with 4:46 left in the half.
With the score tied at 23-23, Richard hit back-to-back jumpers to give Army its largest lead of the half at 27-23 with 26 seconds remaining. The Dolphins scored the last points of the half on their sixth three-pointer, this one by DiMaggio, with 11 seconds remaining. Army came up empty on its final possession, sending the Black Knights into the locker room with a 27-26 advantage.
Richard scored a team-high seven points in the opening 20 minutes, while Johnson led the Dolphins with nine points, all on three-pointers.
Army shot 54.5 percent (12-22) in the first half, but was just 1 for 7 from three-point range and turned the ball over 11 times. Mount Saint Vincent hit 37.0 percent (10-27), but made six three-pointers (6-18).
Army started the half on a 5-2 run to extend its lead to 32-28, but the Dolphins drained back-to-back three-pointers to regain a 34-32 advantage with 17:33 to go. After a pair of free throws by Walker, senior G Jon Sizemore’s fastbreak layup off a Dolphin turnover gave the Black Knights a 36-34 lead with 16:38 left. The basket was part of a 6-0 run that pushed the Black Knights back in front 38-34 with 15:52 on the second-half clock.
The Black Knights led 39-38, but the Dolphins struck again from long range when DiMaggio stroked his third of the game to give them a 41-39 lead with 13:33 to go. Army responded with a 7-0 run to take its largest lead at 46-41 with 10:26 remaining. The Dolphins did not fold, however, as Kieran Halton converted a three-point play to cut the Army lead to 46-44 with 10:17 left.
Army led 50-46, but again the Dolphins found the mark from three-point range on a long jumper by Johnson to trim the margin to 50-49 with 7:56 left. The Black Knights led by two points, but another three-pointer, this one by Cunningham gave the Dolphins a one-point lead with 6:17 left.
Richard answered with a three-pointer of his own for the 10th lead change of the game, putting Army back on top 54-52 with 5:57 on the clock. Panetta tied the game for the fifth time with a pair of free throws with 5:10 left. Neither team scored for the next three minutes until Miller followed his own miss with a jumper in the lane that gave the Black Knights a 54-52 lead with 2:08 left. Army did not trail again.
Mount Saint Vincent came up empty on its next possession, and the Black Knights were able to get the rebound and push the ball up the floor. Miller found a streaking Richard for a layup that extended the Army lead to 58-54 with 1:29 remaining.
Nelson went to work on the defensive end, blocking a pair of shots before Army could corral the rebound. Miller hit 1-of-2 free throws to push Army’s lead to 59-54 with 37 seconds left. Army’s defense came through yet again with a steal before Simmons hit two free throws to extend the Army lead to 61-54 with 29 seconds left. Nelson finished Army’s scoring with a free throw to make it a 62-54 game with 21 seconds remaining in the game. Panetta tacked on the final basket of the game to set the final margin.
Army has won 26 straight games against non-Division I opponents since the 1993-94 season.
The Black Knights play their final game before the holiday break on Tuesday, Dec. 22 when they host New Hampshire. Tip-off at Christl Arena is set for 2 p.m.

From Army Press Release on October 31, 2009:
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Freshman OH Ariana Mankus led all players with 15 kills, while junior MB Amanda Rowell and freshman RS Francine Vasquez also landed double-figure kill numbers, as the Army volleyball team extended its win streak to 14 matches with a 3-0 sweep of Holy Cross on Halloween at Gillis Field House.
Truly tested in the second of a three-set affair, the Black Knights won by 25-12, 25-22, 25-16 scores and improved to 22-3 overall and 10-0 in the Patriot League. Vasquez finished with a double-double (10 kills, 11 digs) for a third match in a row, while Rowell led all players with a .526 hitting percentage. Mankus hit .364 and Vasquez managed a .318 mark to compliment a team-high two solo blocks. Senior SMalissa Gallini and junior S Karyn Powell finished with 22 and 18 assists, respectively.
“I was really proud of the way this team came out and played tonight,” said third-year head coach Alma Kovaci. “They played with a great sense of urgency in the second set against a very much improved Holy Cross team, so give them credit.
“We’re still a little banged up, but I was extremely proud of the way that Malissa (Gallini) and Karyn (Powell) stepped it up tonight. They did a great job of mixing up the offense when we needed to.
Army scored 10 of the first 14 points of the match, as three-straight Holy Cross errors put the Black Knights ahead by a 10-4 score at a Crusader timeout. The Black Knights continued to roll, enjoying at least a seven-point cushion. Back-to-back kills from Holy Cross’ Megan Lynch made it 18-11, but the Black Knights proceeded to put the set away with a 7-1 run.
The second set seesawed throughout, featuring 14 ties and eight lead changes in what was easily the most competitive frame of the night. Neither team was able to enjoy more than a three-point lead and found themselves tied at 22-all on a Mankus kill. Her stinger started a run of three-straight kills for the Black Knights, including one from Dunn and another courtesy of Mankus, to give Gallini a chance to serve for set point. A Crusader error ended the set, 25-22.
Mankus carried her momentum over from the end of the second set to produce eight (zero errors) of her 15 kills in a decisive third set. A Holy Cross kill pulled the Crusaders to within two (9-7) before consecutive kills for Mankus and Vasquez started a mini 5-2 run that put Army ahead 14-9. The Crusaders trimmed the deficit to three (18-15) heading down the home stretch, but Army managed to put the match away with an 8-1 run that included four Mankus kills and a pair from Vasquez.
Army, which hit for a .320 percentage on the night, improved its mark each set. The match culminated in a stellar .514 percentage in a third set that saw 21 kills and just two errors in 37 Black Knight attempts.
Freshman OH Megan Lynch led Holy Cross with 12 kills, while junior S Chelsey O’Donnell finished with 20 assists. Army’s defense held the Crusaders to a .066 hitting percentage, helped by junior L Brittany Jensen and sophomore DS Liberty McEnteewith 10 digs apiece.
“No matter what the record says, we’re still improving and need a lot of work,” Kovaci added. “We’ll get back in the gym this week and get ready for a very tough weekend at Navy (Friday) and American (Saturday).”
The Black Knights visit Annapolis, Md., first for a 7 p.m. match at service-academy rival Navy on Friday. Army then travels to the nation’s capitol for a 4 p.m. match against defending Patriot League champion American on Saturday.
Match Notes: The match lasted 1:17 in its entirety … several children in attendance dressed in Halloween attire for the event … Army remains the only undefeated team in the Patriot League (9-0) and sits firmly alone atop the league standings … in other conference action this weekend, Colgate (8-2) became the second team to clinch a Patriot League Tournament berth with a sweep of Bucknell (4-6) on Friday night … Lehigh (5-5) edged rival Lafayette (3-7) and American (7-3) swept Navy (1-9) … Army has a chance to clinch home court advantage for the 2009 Patriot League Tournament with two wins next weekend.

Steele had hat tricks against the No. 4 ranked, Duke Blue Devils and the Penn State Nittany Lions. With the three goals yesterday, she has already surpassed the career-high 6 goals she scored last year to set a new record with a career-high 7 goals so far this season. Steele’s three goals were able to help the No. 7 ranked, Princeton Tigers beat the Nittany Lions, 9-7, yesterday afternoon in a non-Conference game at Class of 52 Stadium.
“I think last year we had a lot of attackers,” said Steele. “And this year, we’re not as attack heavy, so its really given me an opportunity to step up. Being a bench player for the last three years, now, I have the mentality that I have nothing to lose.”
Steele has 16 goals so far in her career. She has 13 games over the course of the rest of the season to increase those numbers. (more…)
